John Harrold took over the illustrating of the Rupert character as Alex CUBIE had retired, and who'd illustrated the previous annuals from 1974 -1978.John Harrold was born in Glasgow, 1947,and studied art there at the Glasgow School of Art situated in the Charles Rennie Mackintosh building. His first job as a Rupert illustrator was on 'Fun to Cook with Rupert' (drawn in 1973, published 1974).The editor,Frederick Chaplain was impressed and invited him to work for the Daily Express. His first story,Rupert and the Worried Elves, began on 14 October 1976, and in the same year he produced games pages for the annuals.Up to now),he has been illustrating the little bear's adventures for longer than Mary Tourtel, and those children who were brought up on his first adventures are now mature adults.
